We had terrible weather overnight with heavy
thunderstorms but all seems to have
cleared out this morning. Breakfast at
6:30 and debarkation with bikes at 8:00, no goofing off here. The crew was amazing getting all the bikes,
most of which were tandems, down from the top deck in fire brigade
fashion. Within 30 minutes, all the
bikes were off loaded.
We hooked up with
Art and Linda and headed off for the first destination, Paraoika It was a quaint little fishing village with a
very protected harbor and a fleet of Muscovoite ducks.
Art is a bit of a gadget freak (takes one to
know one) and he brought a drone with him for aerial video. Cool!
After traipsing around the village
and
purchasing some Greek cookies (Italian almond cookies- I have no idea who stole
who’s recipe, but they were great ).
Another
couple, Michael a Dartmouth grad and his wife, Margie joined us here to
continue to ride.
We then began climbing to the town of Lefkes, a hill town
where there is a separate dialect of Greek spoken. I believe that isolation is necessary for
dialects so you can imagine how high the climb was to get to the center of the
city from sea level.
The climb was long
and, very hot. Michael and Margie accidentally took another route and Art and
Judy left us to wait for the others.
Also our GPS did not appear to be reliable to tell us where we were and
where we were going. My navigator/rear
admiral was not at all happy. On our way
down, we saw Cary and Sarah by the side of the road with the mechanic from our
crew. They had a rental bike, and one of
the crank arms (for non-cyclists that is the doohickey that the pedals attach
to-very important) fell off.
Additionally, Cary was tearing his hair out with GPS problems. They joined us for the descent into Naousa and
our ship.
We made it back without a single mechanical
problem!
One last look around Naousa
then back to the ship.
Dinner, sleep, and Santorini tomorrow.
